Peter Benson – Retired Circuit Judge

Born: Bradford 16th June 1949. 

Marital status: single.

Educated: Bradford Grammar School 1959 to 1968.

Birmingham University (University Scholar) 1968 to 1971, B.Soc.Sc. (Hons.) in Economics, Politics and Sociology.

Studied law by correspondence course and at the Inns of Court School of Law 1973-1975,

2.1 honours in the Bar Final Exams and called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of The Middle Temple 1975.

In practice at the Bar in Leeds 1975-2001. Junior (i.e. Hon. Secretary) of the North-Eastern Circuit 1979-80. 

Judicial Career: A Recorder (i.e. part-time Judge) of the Crown Court 1991-2001.

Appointed a full-time Circuit Judge 2001 sitting in crime and licensed to try serious sexual offences 2003. 

Licensed to try offences of homicide 2011.

Deputy Resident Judge, Bradford Crown Court 2002 to 2012.

Liaison Judge to the Calderdale Magistrates 2003 to 2015 and to the Huddersfield Magistrates 2003 to 2012.

Judicial member of the Parole Board 2003 to 2009.

Retired 17th June 2016.

Trustee of the Spinal Research Trust 2019.

Interests: Reading, golf, food and wine, France.

Clubs: East India Club, London; Bradford Club; Ilkley Golf Club (President 2017), Ganton Golf
